ExtraHop Helps Wood County Hospital Avert a Major Security Breach

SEATTLE, WA–(Marketwired – Dec 7, 2017) – ExtraHop, the leader in IT analytics for network security and performance management, today announced that Wood County Hospital, a leading regional hospital serving the Northern Ohio area, is using ExtraHop to protect critical assets and patient data from major security threats. With network traffic analytics from ExtraHop, CIO Joanne White and her team averted a major ransomware attack, detecting it two weeks before it was surfaced by their managed security service provider (MSSP).

Wood County Hospital has served the patients of Wood County, Ohio, since 1951. Its operations now span the main hospital center as well as multiple satellite clinics and offices supported by over 700 clinical, administrative, and IT staff. In order to gain critical visibility and improve the signal-to-noise ratio regarding potential threats, Wood County decided to add network traffic analytics to their security portfolio. After evaluating a few solutions, White and her team selected ExtraHop, which delivered immediate security visibility at less than half the cost of competing solutions, all without the need for a specialist that would have cost the hospital in excess of $70,000 per year.

“In the evaluation, ExtraHop delivered immediate value out of the box and its competitive pricing was the cherry on top. It was a no-brainer,” says White.

It didn’t take long for Wood County to start seeing results from ExtraHop. After an employee identified a message that looked like ransomware, the security team turned to ExtraHop to investigate the incident. Sure enough, ExtraHop had already sent alerts on the threat — a new strain of ransomware known as CryptFlle2. With the information ExtraHop provided, the team was able to quickly identify and quarantine the infected machine, neutralizing the threat before it could impact Wood County’s operations.

“Without ExtraHop, the investigation would have taken days or weeks, exposing the hospital to potentially catastrophic risk,” says White. “Even the FBI was impressed when they found out how quickly we identified and contained the threat!”

“Healthcare organizations are lucrative targets for advanced persistent threats, including ransomware. This is because patient data is highly valuable,” said Raja Mukerji, co-founder at ExtraHop. “Wood County Hospital takes these threats seriously, and they are building a security architecture that acknowledges the reality of today’s threats rather than yesterday’s. With a defense-in-depth strategy that includes ExtraHop, they’ve averted a major security event, and they continue to get smarter about how they protect their assets, data, and patients.”
